Strata Elizabeth
Elizabeth, New Jersey
This project re-envisions an existing six-story structure in downtown Elizabeth through a bold yet respectful architectural transformation that bridges historic character with contemporary urban living. The original façade is preserved and restored, maintaining its rhythmic masonry openings and classical proportions, while a striking modern vertical addition is introduced at the center articulated through warm metal screening, expansive glazing, and integrated greenery.
At street level, the building is activated by a sophisticated steakhouse restaurant, conceived as a dynamic social destination. A mezzanine level overlooks the main dining floor, creating a layered and immersive culinary experience, while the kitchen and service functions are efficiently housed within the basement to maintain a seamless guest environment above.
The upper floors are reconfigured into eight luxury residential apartments, each designed to offer refined urban living with abundant natural light and contemporary finishes. The vertical addition not only enhances the building’s identity but also introduces private terraces and planted elements, softening the transition between architecture and city.
Crowning the structure, a rooftop amenity space is envisioned as an elevated retreat for residents, framed by a pergola structure and lush landscaping. From this vantage point, sweeping views toward the New York City skyline create a compelling connection to the broader metropolitan context.
Through its careful juxtaposition of old and new, the project establishes a distinctive architectural dialogue transforming the building into a sophisticated mixed-use landmark within the evolving urban fabric.
